"Suggestive rather than bawdy, these shows relied less on strong scripts or songs than on sheer star power. " Source: the history of burlesque. Photos from the Orange Show gala where I do some volunteer stuff.

"... fun is the use of time in a manner designed for therapeutic refreshment of one's body or mind. While leisure is more likely a form of entertainment or rest, recreation is active for the participant but in a refreshing and diverting manner." Source: definition of fun. Burlesque Dancer
"By the 1860s, British burlesque relied on the display of shapely, underdressed women to keep audiences interested. In the Victorian age, when proper women went to great lengths to hide their physical form beneath bustles, hoops and frills, the idea of young ladies appearing onstage in tights was a powerful challenge." Wheels of Burlesque
"By 1905, burlesque theatre owners formed vaudeville-style circuits of small, medium and big time theatres. Because big time burlesque companies played these theatres in regular rotations, the circuits came to be known as wheels -- the largest being the Columbia (Eastern U.S.), Mutual, and Empire (Western U.S.) wheels. Unlike vaudeville performers who sought weekly bookings as individual acts, burlesquers spent an entire forty week season touring as part of one complete troupe. For three decades, this system made burlesque a dependable source of steady work." Source: the history of burlesque. Photos from the Orange Show gala where I do some volunteer stuff.

Burlesque Smile
"Without question, however, burlesque's principal legacy as a cultural form was its establishment of patterns of gender representation that forever changed the role of the woman on the American stage and later influenced her role on the screen. . . The very sight of a female body not covered by the accepted costume of bourgeois respectability forcefully if playfully called attention to the entire question of the "place" of woman in American society." - Robert G. Allen, Horrible Prettiness: Burlesque and American Culture (Univ. of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, 1991), pp. 258-259. Source: the history of burlesque. Friends photos from the Houston 2007 Accessibility Internet Rally. Our teams did well, but alas we could not quite reach the level of Pop Labs team 1 and Idea Integration - so congratulations to them! The rest of the photos from AIR 2007 from my camera are in the AIR Houston Pool and posted to the Schipulites account.

critter art car
I recall shooting this one at the Art Car Parade, but in no way did he look this menacing. Solitary, just past the outside patio, laying in wait. Taken at the Sullivan Group Event Planning Open House 2007. Note: Sullivan is a client.

Market Square Park
"Market Square Park: Bounded by Travis, Milam, Preston and Congress, Market Square is the geographic heart of downtown and the site of the city’s original commercial center. Market Square Park was the site of City Hall from 1841 through 1939. On Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the park hosts Market Square Market, an open-air shopping venue recreating the air of the street market it hosted until the 1920s." Source: www.houstondowntown.com/Home/Lifestyle/WhatToDo/Parks/ It should also be noted that it was in this park, a while ago, that I took Slaughter's photo in a random encounter.

orange show 2007 gala. So this is pretty much the hottest my flickr photo stream will EVAR be. Last of the series. It was fun. To get the full effect you should listen to Slavic Soul Party while viewing this series. And I should mention the full Orange Show 2007 Gala photo set is up as well.
